With the opening of the Victoria and Albert museum in 2018, the city can start to expect a whole load more visitors. Whether you’re a tourist or a local, we’ve put together our list of the top spots for fine dining in Dundee to satisfy your hunger after a day of exploring.
172 The Caird
Situated in the imposing old Caird House, 172 The Caird overlooks the River Tay, making it the perfect spot to while away an evening. The luxurious decor inside is a mixture of modern and classic, with tartan seating mingling with cool chromes and trendy fittings. This place is perfect if you’re looking for fine dining in Dundee that will suit everyone in your party, as the menu is wide and eclectic. Choose from Scottish classics like Cullen Skink and moules mariniere, or push the boat out with duck breast or truffle gnocchi. Round off your evening with one of their classic cocktails like a Manhattan or a Negroni, or sip on a large selection of gins while listening to their musicians play the grand piano.
Looking through this list, you’d be forgiven for thinking that every restaurant for fine dining in Dundee has a stunning waterside view and, to be honest, you wouldn’t be far wrong. The Tayberry is another venue that boasts impressive views, situated at the Mouth O’ The Tay in Broughty Ferry. And it won’t just be the view you’ll be impressed with. These guys know how to cook. There are starters like goat’s cheese panna cotta with beetroot and pickled strawberry, and black isle carpaccio to peak your interest. And the mains are just as inventive with roast cod served on sweet corn bhaji, and chicken paupiette with fennel stuffing. They also serve some tasty cocktails, made by in-house mixologists, if you’re looking to while away a bit more of your evening.
Cosy and intimate, Piccolo is probably one of the first places people think of when they think of “date night”. However, the food makes it one of our favourite places for a fancy meal too. The menu consists of classic Italian dishes, with fresh fish and Scotland’s finest meat also taking pride of place. Simple decor compliments the atmosphere, but it’s the food that’s the main reason this restaurant has been a staple in Dundee for over 10 years. If you’re lucky enough to be in the area before 6.30pm mid-week, you can also take advantage of their early evening menu, charging only £21 for three tasty courses.
THE place to head if you’re celebrating something special, this Michelin-starred spot serves up local Scottish produce in modern, innovative ways. Go for an ala carte menu or push the boat out with their 5-course tasting menu. Excitingly it’s a surprise tasting menu, meaning that although they’ll cater for dietary requirements, you don’t know what you’ll be eating before sitting down. Pair your meal with an accompanying wine flight for just £35 extra and sit back and enjoy one of the best fine dining restaurants in Dundee.
