How hard are Sundays? Even if you’ve managed to dodge the usual hell of a hangover, the chances are that you have the Monday dreads by lunchtime anyway. We find that the best way to get over the existential angst of a Sunday is to head for a roast. Warming, cosy, and perfectly comforting, it’s just the perfect way to end the week. Having scoured the streets of the city, we’ve come up with our pick of the best Sunday roasts in London. What are your favourites?
Kerridge's Bar and Grill
Right. We’re going fancy straight off the bat here. Tom Kerridge’s new venue in XX is pretty upmarket, making it the perfect pick-me-up if you have the Sunday blues! Situated in the swanky Corinthia Hotel, it very much feels like a high-class gentlemen’s’ club, with low booths, mood lights, and gorgeous art. Despite being a fairly new venue, their Sunday roast is already legendary, with beef, lamb, quail, and pork belly all featuring on the menu. It’s fancy comfort food and we couldn’t love it more.
Moving about as far from English gentlemen’s club as it’s possible to go, we bring you to Mommi, home of the Peruvian Sunday lunch. Yeah, you heard that right: these guys serve up roasts in a totally unique way, with roasted miso aubergine, 24 hour braised lamb teriyaki, and roast Anticucho Spatchcock chicken, replacing dry old roast beef. Probably the coolest venue we’ve been to for Sunday lunch, it’s a great place to hang out with your pals.
The Pig and Butcher
If meat, meat, and more meat is your jam, you’re in the right spot here. And Sundays are when these guys really com alive with six (yes SIX) roasts to choose from. Three of these are available to share, meaning you and a pal can split an Anglais chicken with lemon & thyme butter, a Cowboy chop with apple sauce, or beef with roasted bone marrow. Everything is served with huge, fluffy Yorkies and all the trimmings. If you’re lunching with a veggie, there’s also plenty of choice for them too.
Rock and Rose
Sunday roast in London can often feel like you’re just faced with the choice of many pubs to go to. But with Rock and Rose, you get Sunday lunch in a really unique environment too. This glamorous spot in Richmond serves up delicious roasts in pretty damn quirky surroundings. Choose from lamb, chicken, beef, or nut roast options and wash it all down with one of their impressive cocktails featuring unusual flavour combos.
The Woodman Battersea
Looking like a traditional pub from the outside, the Woodman is a big surprise inside. Fully modernised, it has high, open ceilings, modern, quirky furniture, and a cosy feel. Despite it’s modern feel, it’s still a proper pub with cask and craft ales available, and obviously, a great Sunday roast. There’s four roasts available, including a veggie option, and a great choice of mains. They’re all served with classic roast trimmings and “lashings of gravy” – yay! Best of all, they’re dog friendly, meaning Rover can come along and hoover up any scraps under the table.
The quintessential 2019 neighbourhood restaurant, Pedler is an unassuming venue (from the outside) in Peckham. Small and cosy, you’d be equally at home having a nice Saturday dinner as you would lazing around on a Sunday. And for you guys looking for a Sunday roast in London, Pedler is definitely worth heading to Peckham for, There’s a few options on offer, including picks for veggies, all served with veggies, roots, braised cabbage, roasties, and yorkies. Mmm. Their pudding selection is a delight too with a really impressive cheeseboard that’s perfect for picking on as you while away the afternoon.
